Get Glue: The Sticky New Entertainment Obsession

My latest new obsession? @GetGlue, a kind of FourSquare-esque social site for TV/movie/music fanatics. It occurred to me after playing around with this site for a couple of weeks that I follow and actively watch about 52 television series. That is pretty bonkers if you ask me. And that number doesn’t even take into account series that went off air and that I know pretty much by heart (i.e. I Love Lucy, Dinosaurs, Wonder Years, Ghostwriter).

I got into it because a couple people I follow on Twitter and trust with entertainment recommendations (shout out to Alex Porter and Eric Adam) use the service. Get Glue allows you to “check in” each time you are watching something or listening to something. Not every show or artist is in the system but 99% of the ones I’ve tried to check in to are so whatevs. When you check in, you can earn these little digital stickers. At first, I thought that was hella lame. If nothing else, it would be an experiment in tracking how many shows I watched and which of my friends I can share disgust or mega lust for the cast members. Instead… I was pleasantly surprised to find out that after you hit a certain number of stickers you can request that physical copies be sent to you.

:-O

Whaaaaa? Needless to say I have been a sticker hoarding fool. I requested my first set of stickers the other day. It’s stupid that it takes 4-6 weeks to get them but it gives me time to decide how I’ll use them. Will I put them on my computer? Eh.. NO! Will I use them at work? Eh.. NO! Will I put them on a new bike or surf board? Ehh… HELL NO! I’ll probably end up holding on to them for years and never actually using them like I have with other stuff that I’m so excited to use (and I never actually get around to using because I’m so afraid I’ll regret the decision).

Speaking of television, the other day I got to go to the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for a Breaking Bad event. I got to meet Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, Dean Harris, Giancarlo Esposito, Betsy Brandt, RJ Mitte, and the Creator/Producer of Breaking Bad, Vince Gilligan. It was pretty fan-friggin-tastic.

The next one I’m going to is for Mike & Molly, and the one after that is Homeland. I’m trying to catch up on all the episodes of each show. Later this year I heard there were going to be some uber exciting events and I will have massively long blogs with pictures for those!

On a completely different note, I think I’m going to go to a Meet-Up group this weekend for beach volleyball… on a beach… with an ocean… (I love California).
